Recognize the main size formats

The characters describe dimensions and construction, but they do not fully define interchangeability. Overall diameter, section width, approved rim width, static loaded radius, revolutions per mile, load range, and application can differ. Record the complete tire and wheel information from the vehicle, not a shortened size copied from an invoice.

Match the axle position and duty cycle

Steer, drive, trailer, and all-position products use different tread and casing priorities. A local delivery route with frequent turns creates different scrub and traction demands from long-haul interstate work. Construction sites, refuse service, buses, regional haul, and mixed service add their own heat, impact, start-stop, and casing risks. Never infer operating pressure from a marketplace description or use the sidewall maximum as a universal fleet setting. Weighing and maintenance decisions should follow the fleet's qualified technical process, tire manufacturer data, vehicle requirements, and applicable rules.

Check wheel and clearance compatibility

A nominally similar size can change rim requirements, clearance, gearing, speed indication, ride height, and dual spacing. Verify wheel diameter, width, offset, load rating, valve hardware, brake clearance, and mounting condition. When considering a low-profile conversion or alternate size, obtain an approved conversion analysis. Marketplace sellers should disclose whether tires are loose, mounted, new, retread, take-off, used, or casing-only and should never imply that a size conversion is universally approved.

Include casing and retread strategy

Commercial value continues after the first tread when the casing is suitable for retreading and the fleet can track it. Ask about casing brand, age, repair history, previous retreads, inspection method, retread warranty, casing credit, and reject handling. A low acquisition price can be poor value if the casing has limited future use. Fleets comparing new and retread options should use a common cost-per-mile model and separate tire performance from emergency service and downtime costs.

Write a quote-ready commercial request

Include size, load range, axle position, quantity, vehicle type, route, ZIP, delivery deadline, installation location, current brand or pattern, new or retread preference, casing program, national-account needs, roadside coverage, and recurring demand. Ask each supplier to separate tire price, federal or local charges where applicable, freight, mounting, disposal, service, warranty, and lead time.
